I’m back! With more tips on whimsifying your world, in a bid to help you create a more magical and beautiful world for yourself.
One thing I’ve done to add this magic to my day to day is to really hone in on the really tiny, unnoticed details around me. So many beautiful things surround us but get tragically overlooked in the hustle and bustle. When we’re walking it’s usually from A to B with a mission and a deadline. Our eyes are often focused down, buried in social media and emails, too busy to look around at the world around us beyond a quick glance to make sure we’re not about to collide with anyone. And we miss out on so much beauty this way! I’ve adopted a few ways, over the years, to allow myself to notice the minutiae around me and, honestly, it’s changed how I see the world, and, in turn, how I move through it.

To me, everything holds its own beauty. Even the ugly is beautiful. So I try to look up, away from my phone as much as possible. In fact, all the way up is my favourite direction to look in. Up at the sky, up at the roofs, the birds. Even the phone lines hold beauty in their geometry. The way they slice through the sky. There’s something special about noticing things that others don’t. I have a fun memory of looking up at the sky one day on my way to town, wearing sunglasses, and seeing a beautiful rainbow around the sun. Without my shades, I couldn’t see it, and when I looked at others around me, no one else had noticed. It felt so special to see this beautiful thing that no one else knew about. A secret between me and the sky.

Heading out at night, or just gazing out the window at the stars and moon is also a gorgeous thing to do, and something not enough people think about. Talk to the moon, tell her about your day, imagine everything she and the stars can see from up there. It’s humbling and romantic and makes me feel very connected to the world.
Rooftops also hold a certain magic in them. The hotch potch between modern and old. The stories they could tell. The history they’ve sheltered. Naked trees against the sky, and the way the light falls are all worth noticing.

I’ve recently started following @tabithadaisybiggs on instagram, a photographer who also understands the joy of noticing the beauty in the mundane. She has inspired me even further to look at the world around me in more depth and detail. Taking photos, or concentrating on looking out for certain colours, shapes or textures etc whilst your out on your walks are great ways of noticing these tiny beauties, and a hobby I’ve picked up recently and LOVE is collecting textures using play dough and an ink pad. It forces you to see more and makes every surface a potential piece of art.

The world is such a beautiful patchwork of colours and textures, history, industry, love and neglect, held together by those who take the time to notice. And I truly believe that taking this time adds to much joy to life, opening us up to more intrigue and interest, questions about our town, the people in it, how the world works, and how we should move through it.
So next time you’re out and about, just consider looking up. And if you must be on your phone, make sure to use the camera, to help you document your beautiful, whimsical walk
Until next time, Peace
Jess
