So, What Am I Doing in Iceland?

If you follow me on social media, you probably already know that I’m in Iceland. I haven’t shut up about this trip for a very long time. But you may not know exactly why I’m here, and what compelled me to travel during a worldwide pandemic. So let me tell you.

Last year I quit my job in marketing, and decided that I wanted to be a freelance writer. I enrolled onto an online Copywriting diploma course (from which I graduated with distinction in July this year) and applied for a journalism internship, here in Reykjavik.

I have long been a fan of Iceland (this is my fifth trip out here), And always keep up to date with the latest news, travel and culture by reading The Reykjavik Grapevine magazine. This is an English language magazine both online and in print, aimed at English speaking Icelanders, Ex pats and tourists. It’s a great little magazine, so when I discovered that they offer 3 month internships, I threw myself at the opportunity.

In order to apply for the internship I had to submit a CV, covering letter, and some examples of my writing so far. These included an article I had published in the RnR music magazine, some poems and songs and a couple of pieces I had written for my diploma.

Þingvellir, Iceland

Of course, with the Covid 19 outbreak, it was touch and go for a while as to whether I’d be able to come out at all, but with Iceland reopening their borders in July, I managed to make it, and here I am. From September 2 until December 2 I’ll be in Reykjavik working as a writer and reporter for the Reykjavik Grapevine. I’ve already written and had published my first article, written in the confines of mandatory quarantine, and I’m really excited to see how the next few months unfold, and what other adventures they lead to.

Until next time, Bless bless,
